The Thesaurus of the GeoSphere Austria provides clear definitions of geoscientific terms across nine thematic areas. It is designed as a bilingual resource (German and English) and includes bibliographic references for each definition. In this way, it supports consistent and transparent use of key terms in the context of data attribution and metadata description.
The Thesaurus of the GeoSphere Austria is a bilingual (German/English) controlled vocabulary (a formally structured, machine-readable collection of terms).
It was designed as an institutional knowledge representation (structured representation of domain knowledge) and is implemented as a SKOS vocabulary in RDF (international standards for Linked Open Data).
It contains geoscientific terminology with a strong Austrian focus, as used in GeoSphere Austria’s maps, text- and data publications.
Each term is a concept (a professionally defined unit of meaning) and has its own persistent and resolvable URI (unique web identifier), a preferred label, definitions, synonyms, semantic relationships (broader, narrower, and related concepts), and a bibliographic reference.
Through its RDF- and SKOS-based modelling, the thesaurus supports the FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and complies with the requirements of the PSI Directive on the re-use of public sector information (e.g. including INSPIRE compatibility).
