Information about the drill core storage and the drill core storage database<\/b><\/div>
Introduction<\/i><\/div>
The central documentation point for all of this data is GeoSphere Austria in Vienna.<\/div>
The drill cores stored in the Erzberg core storage facility are mostly core sections selected by experts and of great scientific and often also economic importance. Many dirl cores have so far only been examined for specific purposes or only with limited methodology, but are now available for future work not only in terms of physical accessibility but also through the offensive availability of the metadata relating to them.<\/div>
With the planning of the relocation of the then Federal Geological Survey from the Palais Rasumofsky to the new location at Neulinggasse 38 (both in Vienna's 3rd district), which was completed in February 2005, it was also necessary for the drill core boxes stored scattered in the spacious basement of the palace a suitable storage option must be found. The space at the new location would not have been nearly sufficient for this. After examining several options, the decision was made to set up a \u201cCentral Austrian Drill Core Archive\u201d in the former Dreikönig<\/i> compressor hall on the Styrian Erzberg.<\/div>

The drill core storage facility<\/i><\/div>
Access to the core storage facility is only possible during the snow-free period (generally from May to October). Access (also for trucks) is from the VOEST-ALPINE company building via unpaved access roads to the mining area.<\/div>

The hall, which is equipped with a specially designed shelving system, has a total area of 353 m². The dimensions are 12.8 m x 27.6 m and 7 m high. The conditions in the hall are well suited for storing drill cores: The hall is dry and sufficiently bright. There is a work room in the entrance area. The drill core material is accessed using a mobile lifting platform that offers space for one person. The actual manipulation of the core boxes is then done by hand.<\/div>

As of 2009, there are around 13 km of core sections stored in the core storage facility, which results in a utilization rate of around 75%. The inclusion of additional core routes can only be done with a sense of proportion or using clear criteria. These concern the scientific and, if applicable, practical significance of the core route, the factual irretrievability, the existence of sufficient documentation and the transfer of ownership rights to the GBA. In the future, decisions may also have to be made as to whether and which core sections will be discarded in order to be able to store newly added, particularly significant core material.<\/div>

The operating company VOEST-ALPINE Erzberg Ges.m.b.H. is responsible for the support and maintenance of the building and the technical facilities (e.g. the electric lifting platform, power supply, etc.) responsible for reimbursement of costs.<\/div>

<\/div>
The drill core data<\/i><\/div>
The available information on the core boxes located in the core storage facility is stored in an MS SQL server database. From this database, the exact location of the respective core box can be determined and other information parameters relating to the drilling can be retrieved. Where available, documents relating to the drilling (e.g. drilling profiles) were collected from various archives and other sources (libraries, external companies, the Internet, etc.), scanned and linked to the database as PDF files. Inspection of these documents and the full metadata is granted upon request, provided this is compatible with the rights of third parties.<\/div>

With regard to the coordinate information (righting and northing values in the system of the Austrian Federal Reporting Network; BMN) for the drilling points, it should be noted that in many cases these are not based on geodetic measurements in the field, but were taken from entries in topographic maps, for example. The exact location of many boreholes cannot therefore always be reconstructed (detailed information is available in the database).<\/div>

As of 2009, the core storage facility contains core sections from 372 boreholes from Austria and three boreholes from abroad (Germany 1 and Poland 2). The cores are stored in a total of 5103 core boxes, about 80 percent of which are sealed (nailed). At the beginning of 2009, a total of 484 scanned documents in PDF format were available for the drill cores.<\/div>

Informationen zum Bohrkernlager und zur Bohrkernlagerdatenbank<\/b><\/div>
Einführung<\/i><\/div>
Die zentrale Dokumentationsstelle für alle diese Daten ist die GeoSphere Austria in Wien.<\/div>
Bei den im Kernlager am Erzberg lagernden Bohrkernen handelt es sich größtenteils um von Fachleuten ausgewählte Kernstrecken von großer wissenschaftlicher, häufig auch volkswirtschaftlicher Bedeutung. Viele Kernstrecken wurden bislang nur für bestimmte Zwecke bzw. nur mit eingeschränkter Methodik untersucht, stehen aber nun nicht nur hinsichtlich der physischen Zugänglichkeit sondern auch durch die offensive Verfügbarmachung der sie betreffenden Metadaten für zukünftige Bearbeitungen zur Verfügung.<\/div>
Mit der Planung der Übersiedlung der damaligen Geologischen Bundesanstalt vom Palais Rasumofsky an den neuen Standort in der Neulinggasse 38 (beide im 3. Wiener Gemeindebezirk), die im Februar des Jahres 2005 abgeschlossen wurde, musste auch für die im weitläufigen Keller des Palais verstreut gelagerten Bohrkernkisten eine geeignete Lagerungsmöglichkeit gefunden werden. Die Räumlichkeiten am neuen Standort wären dafür bei Weitem nicht ausreichend gewesen. Nach Prüfung mehrerer Möglichkeiten fiel die Entscheidung für die Einrichtung eines "Zentralen Österreichischen Bohrkernarchivs" in der ehemaligen Kompressorhalle Dreikönig auf dem Steirischen Erzberg.<\/div>

<\/div>
Das Bohrkernlager<\/i><\/div>
Die Zufahrt zum Bohrkernlager ist nur in der schneefreien Zeit (im Allgemeinen von Mai - Oktober) möglich. Die Anfahrt (auch für LKW) erfolgt vom Betriebsgebäude der VOEST-ALPINE über nicht asphaltierten Zufahrtswege des Bergbauareals.<\/div>

Die Halle, die mit einem eigens konzipierten Regalsystem ausgestattet ist, weist eine Gesamtfläche von 353 m² auf. Die Ausmaße belaufen sich auf 12,8 m x 27,6 m und 7 m Höhe. Die Bedingungen in der Halle sind für die Lagerung von Bohrkernen gut geeignet: Die Halle ist trocken, ausreichend hell. Im Eingangsbereich befindet sich ein Arbeitsraum. Der Zugriff auf das Bohrkernmaterial erfolgt mit Hilfe einer mobilen Hebebühne, die Platz für eine Person bietet. Die eigentliche Manipulation der Kernkisten erfolgt dann von Hand aus.<\/div>

Mit Stand 2009 lagern im Bohrkernlager Kernstrecken im Ausmaß von rund 13 km, das ergibt eine Auslastung von etwa 75%. Die Aufnahme von zusätzlichen Kernstrecken kann nur mit Augenmaß bzw. unter Anwendung klaren Kriterien erfolgen. Diese betreffen die wissenschaftliche und ggf. praktische Bedeutung der Kernstrecke, die faktische Unwiederbringlichkeit, das Vorhandensein einer ausreichenden Dokumentation und den Übergang der Eigentumsrechte an die GBA. In Zukunft müssen u.U. auch Entscheidungen getroffen werden, ob und welche Kernstrecken verworfen werden, um neu hinzukommendes, besonders bedeutsames Bohrkernmaterial einlagern zu können.<\/div>

Für die Betreuung und Wartung des Gebäudes und der technischen Einrichtungen (z.B. der elektrischen Hebebühne, Stromzufuhr etc.) ist die Betreibergesellschaft VOEST-ALPINE Erzberg Ges.m.b.H. gegen Kostenersatz zuständig.<\/div>

Die Bohrkerndaten<\/i><\/div>
Die verfügbaren Informationen zu den im Kernlager befindlichen Bohrkernkisten sind in einer MS-SQL-Server-Datenbank abgelegt. Aus dieser Datenbank lässt sich die genaue Position des Stellplatzes der jeweiligen Bohrkernkiste eruieren und weitere die Bohrung betreffende Informationsparameter können abgerufen werden. Auch wurden, soweit vorhanden, Dokumente zu den Bohrungen (z.B. Bohrprofile) in diversen Archiven und anderen Quellen (Bibliotheken, Firmen außer Haus, Internet\u2026etc.) erhoben, eingescannt und als PDF-Files mit der Datenbank verknüpft. Die Einsichtnahme in diese Dokumente sowie in die vollständigen Metadaten wird auf Anfrage gewährt, sofern dies mit den Rechten Dritter vereinbar ist.<\/div>

Bezüglich der Koordinatenangaben (Rechts- und Hochwerte im System des österreichischen Bundesmeldenetzes; BMN) zu den Bohrpunkten ist zu beachten, dass diese in vielen Fällen nicht auf geodätischen Vermessungen im Gelände beruhen, sondern z.B. von Eintragungen in topografischen Karten abgegriffen wurden. Der exakte Lagepunkt vieler Bohrungen kann daher nicht immer rekonstruiert werden (Detailinformationen dazu sind in der Datenbank verfügbar).<\/div>

Mit Stand 2009 befinden sich im Bohrkernlager Kernstrecken von 372 Bohrungen aus Österreich sowie drei Bohrungen aus dem Ausland (Deutschland 1 und Polen 2). Die Bohrkerne lagern in insgesamt 5103 Kernkisten, die zu etwa 80 Prozent verschlossen (zugenagelt) sind.
